a heads up on some cool stuff at this year's festival. soem of the best digital/indie/global/latest films around. main site is http://fest06.sffs.org/

recommended for this tribe:

pocket cinema
http://fest06.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=73

"While we use the KinoTek programming stream to investigate emergent uses of media technologies, it is equally devoted to celebrating the aesthetic and expressive potential of such works. Pocket Cinema sits perfectly between these two objectives. The program features an array of short works made by and for mobile devices such as cell phones. It will also include discussions by the makers, producers or distributors of these works, illuminating current trends in and creative concerns of mobile screen culture."

also:

cock byte: masters of machinima
http://fest06.sffs.org/films/film_details.php?id=17

"The emerging genre of machinima—CGI animation made using the 3D graphics engines from video games—is still in its infancy, but already it has its first resident geniuses: Austin-based Rooster Teeth Productions, the makers of the episodic online sketch comedies Red vs Blue: Blood Gulch Chronicles and The Strangerhood. Launched on the Web in 2003 as a five-minute goof on the blockbuster sci-fi shooter game Halo, Blood Gulch Chronicles has long since transcended its DIY fan-film origins to become an international phenomenon. Part locker-room humor, part Beckett-like absurdist tragicomedy, part wicked vivisection of game culture and sci-fi action films and games, each episode features spot-on comic dialogue, sharp editing and inventive direction, Now in its fifth season, BGC is downloaded by several hundred thousand viewers worldwide each week and has been written about in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and other major publications. The Strangerhood, the team's second outing, is a similarly hilarious, absurdist comedy series made using characters and settings from the world's most popular game, The Sims. Rooster Teeth has also made numerous occasional machinima pieces, including mock PSAs, marketing pieces for game companies and concert videos for Barenaked Ladies. This Festival program, a sort of Rooster Teeth greatest hits, will feature the finest moments from Blood Gulch Chronicles and The Strangerhood, rarely seen one-offs, outtakes and new work with several members of the zany troupe in attendance onstage to present their work and conduct a Q&A following the screening."

there you go. many many other great films too.

That was many years ago. I used a wired video phone at that time. The technology never really took off. Many people said that the fatal flaw was that women wanted to make themselves presentable before they let someone see them. Without pictures, you could happily take a phone call on the thrown, or even in the bath.

Vodaphone have just launched their 3G network in NZ and one of the standard features is videotelephony. They are offering the same rates as for ordinary voice calls. Of calls before you can call someone you have to know someone who also has a video capable phone, but that will come. Will it take off this time? I'll be interested to see what controls you have, eg deciding when to allow the camera to operate.

Lee Morgan, 20, jumped from the Humber Bridge after a New Year's Eve row with Sherrie Smith. The couple had got engaged on Christmas Day.

Hull coroner Geoffrey Saul was told Mr Morgan had called his fiancee after leaving the party from the landmark bridge.

She said: "I could see the lights. It went black and the phone cut out."

The inquest heard a bridge worker saw Mr Morgan jump while holding his phone. His body was not found until February 9.

Miss Smith told the hearing her fiancee was not drunk but had been in a "strange mood" at the party and was "looking for an argument over the silliest of things", according to a report in the Daily Mirror.

She told him to calm down and phone in the morning but he called an hour later from the bridge.

The hearing heard Mr Morgan - who has just landed a new job - had threatened to jump from the bridge following the sudden death of his dad in 1997 but was stopped by his mother.

A verdict of suicide was recorded.

Budding amateur photographers and citizen journalists should not be tempted to become star stalkers says the founder of an amateur photo agency.

Kyle MacRae, whose agency Scoopt represents mobile snappers so they get paid for their work, said there are serious ethical issues at stake.

Following the London bomb attacks and Asian tsunami, news outlets have been keen to exploit mobile snaps and video.

Cameraphone growth has let more people capture events as they happen.

Such hazy snaps usually taken by amateurs who witness events before they hit the headlines are proving valuable to traditional news organisations.

Although Mr MacRae is passionate about the potential impact witness or citizen journalists can have in changing what becomes newsworthy, he said that should not mean people go out deliberately searching for that elusive scoop.

This week, the Chartered Institute of Journalists also warned news organisations against actively encouraging people to do that, adding that people should be paid for their contributions too.

"The real issue here is an ethical issue if a bomb goes off and someone stops and takes a picture instead of helping," Mr MacRae told the BBC News website.
Moblogimport V0.1 represents fair use of that right. Basically, moblogimport allows you to grab your moblog from textamerica, or any other moblogging provision, and move all of your images to your new moblogging host.
Now, of course we would like people to come over to mobloguk, where your images remain your own, and there is never any advertising, but this software is here for you to do with as you will.
For me, and one of the reasons we set up mobloguk was because so many places either : Charged or : owned your content once it had been uploaded.

We license mobloguk on a copyright commons basis, so if there are any techie types about, you can have our code for non commerical purposes! We also urge people to license their own work this way so no-one can use pics of your children to sell Nappies, or whatever.

Since my mob is mostly for friends and family, I take pics that I think would interest them about what I'm doing or seeing. I took some pics of a movie premiere and after party I went to, for instance, since most of my friends and family don't know what that's like. I shot my office and office building, so out of towners could get a sense of where I worked. And I've been doing an ongoing tour of Rockefeller Center, which is full of famous art deco pieces that few people know about.

I also take pics of things that make me smile, so I can share them. In the sidewalk outside my house, for instance, there are squirrel tracks in the concrete. I moblogged them so that other people might get a smile from them, or so that at least they'd know something more about me.

Since a bunch of my friends are working on their houses, I take pictures of things like putting up a ceiling fan or painting the home theater so they can see where I'm at, and also maybe see something that's useful to them.

I try not to take pics of people they don't know and probably wouldn't care about. I try not to put too many pet pics up. I don't do too many "me" pics. I don't do 6 shots of the same thing unless there's a reason...I pick 1 good shot and move on. I take pics of things that have stories behind them so I can blog the story.
Ofoto Mobile premium service is available to consumers at $24.99 with a one year commitment. If you prefer month-to-month, you'll pay just $2.99. There are a few exceptions. Early users of our premium service will continue to receive the price offered at the time they signed onto the service for the length of the commitment. And costs charged by carriers who directly bill consumers may vary depending on each carrier.

Ofoto was founded in July 1999 in Berkeley, California by a diverse group of Internet veterans united by a passion for photography and the shared frustration of being unable to get high-quality prints from their digital cameras. As digital photographers, they knew that it was easier to share digital pictures with family and friends, but they also wanted film-quality prints. From frustration came innovation as they set out to develop an advanced, yet easy-to-use, Internet service. They built their own digital photography lab and opened for business on December 13, 1999…

Ofoto's first year in business brought more than a million members and continuing innovation and improvements,

thanks to great feedback from our customers.

We added a film processing and digitizing service, international shipping…

In June of 2001, Ofoto became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Eastman Kodak Company.
